The European Union is researching hair tints and dyes in relation to their toxic effect and links to skin allergies. The decision is based on a report from the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) who in the light of this possible risk recommended an examination of the substances used in the preparation of tints.
The SCCP analysed 46 substances habitually used in hair tints of which, according to the research, 23 had a high capacity of provoking allergies and four of them a “moderate” capacity to do so. Currently, the manufacturers of these products are obliged to warn of potential allergic reactions that may be provoked by their use, although to-date they do not need to specify whether the allergy could be extreme, strong or moderate.
