Before laser hair removal

Because laser hair removal is a medical procedure and you should make the same efforts in choosing a professional as you would do to select a surgeon, in our consulting rooms you can:

  • Verify the qualifications of our healthcare technicians so that you feel safe and secure with the knowledge and experience of those who will be performing the treatment.
  • Confirm that the lasers we use are both authorised and high strength, as low strength and intense pulsed light lasers are not as effective and provoke a higher rate of complications.
  • By means of studying a host of factors, we will determine if the procedure will be effective or contraindicated for you.
  • We will ask you about your medical history, as well as any medications you may be taking.
  • We will do a free test shot with the laser best suited to your skin, to test the reaction of your skin to the laser.
  • We will inform you of the risks and benefits that may accrue.
  • We will explain what the laser can and can’t do for you and what results you will obtain.

Once it has been confirmed that you are a good candidate and you agree to submit to the treatment, you will sign a consent form in which you declare yourself to be duly informed and you expressly authorise the laser depilation.

To be borne in mind: You cannot undergo laser depilation if you have tanned skin from either solar exposure or self-tanning products or UV rays; you must wait until the tan has disappeared completely.  Be sure to tell the technician if you have tanned recently.  This is due to the fact that a tan increases the risk of burning and discolouring the skin after the treatment.  The safest thing to do is to avoid exposure to the sun for 4 to 6 weeks prior to the treatment.

Two to three days prior to the laser depilation, you must shave the area to be treated and then allow the hairs to start growing.  Don’t use wax or tweezers, nor should you have electrolysis for 3 weeks prior to the treatment.

During and After Laser Hair Removal

It is reassuring to know what is going to happen during and after the laser depilation treatment sessions.

  1. During the laser depilation, you will wear special glasses so that your eyes are not exposed to the laser light.
  2. To begin with you will notice a sensation similar to a mild sting, which indicates that the laser has been activated.  The treatment involves a series of impulses which provoke stinging and a scalding sensation.  Our specialist may apply a topical anaesthetic upon the area to minimise the discomfort, but the majority of patients withstand the treatment without it.  Some people liken the sensation to that of an elastic band hitting your skin.  You may also notice a burnt hair smell, which is normal and should not cause you concern.
  3. The procedure may last from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the area you are having treated.  The smaller the area to be treated, the less time it will take and therefore in more extensive areas, such as the back, the treatment time will take longer.
  4. After laser depilation you may notice a slight inflammation and reddening of the treated area.  Some people say that it is as though they had little bites or stings and you may even notice a slight scabbing on the skin.  If this were to happen, aloe vera will be applied to hydrate the affected area.  Normally, the majority of our patients do not have too much reddening.
  5. Do not expect the hair to disappear immediately after the treatment; hair loss tends to occur during the two weeks following the procedure.
  6. In general, you can return to your daily routine immediately, providing you avoid direct exposure to the sun.  Ensure you use a high Factor sun protection cream.propremu-en_317
  7. We advise you to avoid exercise or intense activity during the first 24 hours, in order to avoid perspiration and therefore increased irritation of the skin.
  8. You will need to avoid direct exposure to the sun, UV rays or sunbeds for several weeks after the treatment.  Be propreh-en_317careful when you touch the treated areas: do not depilate with wax or pull the hairs with tweezers, do not pick or scratch the skin, do not rub it or apply a peel.  Generous cleaning with soap and water will suffice.
  9. In general, between 4 and 8 sessions are needed in order to see real results, in other words a reduction of hair of approximately 85% to 95% in the treated area.
